the first and worst

Let's get right to it, shall we? When we first bought our house in June of 2009, we knew that the kitchen needed a complete overhaul. Don't believe me? Check it out:
No, it's not your computer, it really was that color. See that dishwasher? Stainless steel you say? No, no, no. It was spray-painted silver. And those cabinets! Made from old roadside farmstand signs. It gets worse...

The parkay (spell?) wooden tiles had to be removed with a hammer and chisel, one by one. We spent many nights sitting in the floor hammering away. Everyone got to take a turn: parents, in-laws, friends, even my four-year-old niece took a go at it. (She thought it was fun! Ha!)

So then, after we tore everything out, my uncle, St. John, began to put it all back together again. We (and by "We" I mean "He") changed the layout, added new cabinets, replastered the ceiling, added new hardwood floors, new appliances, etc. etc. etc. Here's how it looked in between:
Actually, it looked like this for about 2 and 1/2 months. Our countertop order got messed up, and on the day it was supposed to be installed, I called to find out where they were. "They" was The Countertop Store in Maumelle. "They" had no idea what I was talking about, because the order was never placed. The man who came out to measure forgot to put the order in. "They" hung up on me three times and we suffered through many weeks (10 to be exact) of eating microwave dinners and washing dishes in the bathtub. But after my dad called and raised hell, we got the countertop for basically nothing.

That adorable little window was original. We centered the plumbing and sink right under it. My mother, St. Renea, tirelessly scraped 30 years worth of paint off of it so it could open.

That farmsink was my splurge. I always wanted one! It's my favorite part of the kitchen!

My uncle installed that subway tile and designed and cut the tiles to frame out that little window. He's a genius I tell you!

We love our kitchen! It went from the ugliest room in the house, to one of my favorites. Thanks to family, friends, and a lot of hard work, I guess anything's possible!

Have a great Tuesday!
